Stories of the World links very neatly into the international understanding element of the Coordinator’s five objectives. The key component here provided by LOCOG, the British Council and UK Sport is International Inspiration. The Singapore Pledge committed London 2012 to staging a Games for the unity of the youth of the world and International Inspiration is the realisation of that pledge. It aims to reach 12 million children and young people in 20 countries around the world by 2012.
In our region there are particularly strong links between Nottinghamshire and Brazil. Lord Coe visited The Dukeries in Ollerton last May and was clearly impressed by what he saw and heard and when Joseph Whitaker received its Get Set Network plaque in March LOCOG staff were very impressed. See http://www.london2012.com/blog/2010/03/london-2012-international-sports-participation-programme.php for a blog from a member of the Education team.
Countries participating are: Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Brazil, India, Jordan, Malaysia, Mozambique, Nigeria, Palau, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago and Zambia.
The potential gains for children and young people from all participating countries are huge with horizons broadened, attitudes changed and lives enhanced by the experience. The photo on the right above shows young people from Trinidad and Tobago as International Inspiration representatives at Vancouver alongside Lord Coe and Tessa Jowell MP.
